Un par contén a información da cor e o outro a da rugosidad da pel. Cada característica está codificada nun xene, elemento da cadea de ADN (acedo desoxirribonucléico) que constitúe o cromosoma.<br /><br />As dúas opcións de cada xene, verde e amarelo por exemplo, son os alelos. Os cromosomas son dobres no núcleo das células cun par de alelos idénticos ou diferentes. O alelo dominante impón a súa característica. O alelo recesivo só se expresa se é dobre.<br /><br />Imaxe activa guisante homocigótico, con dous pares de alelos idénticos.<br />Imaxe activa guisante heterocigótico. con dous pares de alelos diferentes, o alelo verde é dominante e impón a súa cor e o alelo liso imponse sobre o rugoso.
